Pee Wee crayton
"Early Hour Blues"
Blind Pig BPcD 5052
Little did I know. I was not familiar with Pee Wee crayton, so when
this Blind Pig release arrived I didn't know what to expect. What I got
was a lesson in blues guitar from a master.
Pee Wee crayton was a west coast blues mainstay from the early 40's until his death in 1985. Influenced and taught by jazz great charlie christian and by legendary bluesman T-Bone Walker, crayton's trademark style was based on power chords and flashy single note magic. It's all here on this terrific disc, from Early Hours with its sweet sound of jazzy blues, to the grinders like Blues After Hours, When I'm Wrong and come On Baby. Need a shuffle or two? Then give a listen to Head'n Home or the horn filled dandy E.T. Blues.
I couldn't help but wonder if Albert
collins was a Pee Wee fan because there it was, that dynamic single
note wizardry. Seven originals highlight this eleven song masterpiece.
Just put the cd player on random.you can't go wrong. After listening to
this disc I sought out more Pee Wee and found Vanguard's 1971 release, Things
I Used To Do. This was truly a fine blues guitar player who, like
many, never received the recognition for his tremendous contributions.
We're lucky, we can now enjoy and appreciate Pee Wee crayton at his best.
