MOLTEN MIKE "GENUINE BLUESMAN" Molten Mike wasn’t what I first expected. I think the name threw me off. "Molten" usually refers to metal and I guess I assumed this guy would be meltin’ some metal with screaming electric guitar, but I was dead wrong. It took only a few seconds of listening for me to realize my error. And after I looked at the picture of Mike and his National steel on the back cover and read the endorsements, I knew that my assumption was completely erroneous. (Never assume.) Molten Mike calls this all-original collection of songs, "certified Porch Music", and it is a stew of some mighty tasty Delta-style acoustic blues. Mike writes songs that capture the essence of traditional blues. They sound like they could have been recorded in the 20’s or 30’s. Backed up by "Stevie B" Burgess on bass, Sam Long on drums and "Unkle Joe" Ierna on trumpet, Mike breezes through a dozen appealing examples of his stylish, down-home music. My only complaint about this album is its length--only 40 minutes. And I would have enjoyed reading something about the artist rather than a whole page of credits. But those are very minor criticisms of what is an excellent and enjoyable album. Molten Mike is the genuine article alright, and I’ll be looking to catch him live one of these nights soon. ©copyright 1999, Suncoast Blues Society |
