Microwave Dave and the Nukes "Goodnight, Dear" Bluesworks BLW-5500 Dave Gallaher’s vocals are Georege Thorogood-like, gruff and alcohol hones. His guitar work is strong and rocking. He’s pretty speedy on the maracas as well. Jerry Mccain, a great harp player who showsup on other Piedmont blues band discs, does a beautiful job on Last call For Alcohol. Rick Godfrey’s bass and Mike Alexander’s drumming, on most of the tracks, provides a hoppin’ solid - yet polite - rhythmic guide. This Huntsville, AL trio are joined by a host of additional musicians making this a very eclectic disc. A number of cuts start with acoustic, deltaesque openers and break into serious jumping after a few bars. An exception is Peace In The Alley, a pleasant acoustic tribute piece. They pay Bo Didley a humorous tribute with his traditional sound. Born To Boogie Woogie is a fast swing-like tune with a good middle build-up. Got My Mind Made Up has super strong slide work and breaks into gentle, slightly distorted, skin-tingling guitar rifts. They do Body And Fender Man with a background road trip rhythm. Don’t You Just Know has a Louisiana feel. Atomic Powered also has a cajun taste with a touch of latin/surf guitar. The acoustic start of Highway’s Like A Woman breaks into slide with spine-moving fretwork and fill-in-the-blank humor making this tune especially fun. The Lowcountry Blues Bash (see I Was There) brochure suggests folks get to this band early because they pack the joint. This is a seriously fun band, if they ever show up again DON’T MISS THEM!
