James Harman "Takin’ chances" cannonball cBD 29107 Reading the liner notes I noticed James said he was going over some old material and noticed a theme…that life is a gamble, that everything you do in life is a gamble. When gambling, you can do it many ways. When playing the blues , you can play them many different styles. That is exactly what James did on this cd. He’s covered the complete blues spectrum. There are no new sounds, but then again, all the great sounds are here. Some of the people helping James get those tones are guitar slingers Kid Ramos, Bob Margolin, Junior Watson and long time blues lovers will know the name Buddy Reed. This would be a good cd to put on if you were entertaining friends. After each song someone might come up and ask "Who was that?" Have you ever been to a party and all of a sudden a song comes on and everybody gets up dancing? Well, when Frolictime comes on, it will probably happen. This is a piano led acoustic number. Sounds like a New Orleans party song. Of course being a harmonica lover, when crapshoot comes on everyone’s head and toes will be going up and down. This is a harp-in-your-face song, the kind I truly love. Another good harp song is Five’ll Getcha Ten. The big old reverb sounds on Old-Man Eyes is really hot, too. To me the lyrics of blues songs are part of the draw. I love a tune that tells it like it is. Let It Ride does that with an awesome groove. James sings about just going for it. Lucky Dog was inspired after being on Dave Letterman’s show. He was performing with ZZ Top and someone said to him, "Billy Gibbons is making you famous, putting you on TV. You’re a lucky dog!" Modern Numbers Game is so catchy, after listening to it, every time you see a lottery sign, you’ll be singing L-O-T-T…E-R-Y. James dedicates this cd to 2 of his inspirations that passed away. His dog, Miss Bessie Mae, and to his mother, who James says "put me on a piano bench at 4 and made me love reading, writing, drawing and painting. She let me have Dad’s Marine Band harp to mess with, IF I did my piano lesson". I really like this cd. If you like the blues, you will too. Max Dolder ©copyright 1999, Suncoast Blues Society |
