George "Harmonica" Smith

"Now You can Talk About Me"

Blind Pig BPcD-5049

If you are a fan of blues harmonica, this cD is essential! If you are intrigued by the sounds of William clarke, Rod Piazza, Kim Wilson or Mark Hummel, come listen to the man who taught them the blues harp. The first 5 songs are from the 60’s. All were issued on vinyl 45 records in 1960 and ‘65.  On Tight Dress you can hear echoes of Rod Piazza’s chromatic playing. George has a fantastic tone on these tracks.  I wonder what kind of amp he was using? On the next 9 tunes, George is backed by Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers. These cuts were recorded in 1982 and issued on a vinyl album for Murray Brothers Records.  Folks, this is one of the greatest records ever made, bar none! Strong words, I know, but just listen to the tone of his harp on these selections.  Any harmonica players or fans listening will have died and gone to heaven!  Great Gobs Of Greasy Gravy! This is the crunchiest sound that has ever blasted from a cD! George’s playing is sensational, as he switches from diatonic to chromatic harps and plays several different difficult positions.

Some outstanding highlights are Last chance, where he plays a Bb chromatic in 3rd position and switches mid-phrase to a low F diatonic! Stunning! And he does it several times on this tune! On the cut, Astatic Stomp, he is joined in a harp duo with Rod Piazza. This track may well be the Holy Grail of harp tone! First Rod plays two choruses, then George two choruses, then they trade licks! Absolutely incredible! Also spectacular are the two "standards", I Left My Heart In San Francisco and Peg O’ My Heart. These two illustrate what an incredible mastery of this humble instrument that George Smith had.

This cD alone is a stellar testament to a man who was able to use his immense talent to create a sound now imitated and used by virtually every blues harpist world wide.  Sadly, George Smith passed away in 1983. As the title of this cD states, "Now You can Talk About Me". I’m talkin’, George.  BUY THIS cD!
