Blue Junction

"22:17 Live in Aarhus"

I was thrilled to receive this European CD to review. There is something different about European Blues that I can't put my finger on but love to hear. The whole CD was recorded live at Fatter Eskil in Aarhus, Denmark and the first thing to hit me was the atmosphere captured on this disc. Recording in a blues club can be tough at times I am sure though it works very well here.

Blues Junction consists of Ole Frimer (guitar & vocals), Uffe Steen (guitar), Morten Brauner (bass) and Esben Bach (drums), four of Denmark's finest musicians. Each of them successful in their own right and on this CD, they bring together a mix of Chicago, Texan and Danish Blues.

Half of the eight tracks are written by Ole Frimer with nice covers of Tired Man (Albert Collins) and Messin' with the Kid (Junior Wells). The underlying theme I found through all of the tracks was the excellent rhythm that Morten and Esben keep and the superb guitar work of Ole and Uffe. I was unable to pick a favorite track from this disc, from the opening funky "If you could forgive me" through the slower "Workin' too much" to the closing jazzy "Junction Shuffle" each track had my feet tapping and wishing they were touring Florida.

It's a good job CDs don't wear out as this disc has already been well played at home, work and in the car. So if you missed out on that European vacation this year, surf over to their website http://www.bluejunction.dk to check them out and email their record company at intermusic@intermusic.dk to order yourself a trip to a Danish Blues club.
